Diabetes Diet & Nutrition

A diabetes diet simply means eating the right foods in moderation and sticking to regular meal timings.

A diabetes diet plan is a healthy-eating plan that is naturally rich in nutrients and low in fat and calories. The key elements in a diabetic diet are fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

If you are a diabetic or have prediabetes, your doctor will recommend that you see a dietitian to help you develop a healthy eating plan. Following a  plan helps you control your blood sugar (glucose), manage your weight and control risk factors for heart disease, such as high blood pressure and high blood fats.

When you eat excess calories or/and fat, your body responds by creating an undesirable rise in blood sugar levels. If blood glucose isn’t in control, it can lead to serious problems, such as a dangerously high blood glucose level (hyperglycemia) and long-term complications, such as nerve, kidney and heart damage.

You can help keep your blood glucose level in the recommended limits by making healthy food choices and tracking your eating habits.

Dietary do’s & don’ts

  1. 1. Make sure not to skip meals
  2. 2. Avoid eating heavy
  3. 3. Avoid excessively salty food
  4. 4. Do not add sugar to your food
  5. 5. Avoid consuming tempting food items like cakes, candies, soda, sweetened cereal, jelly or ice-cream.

For most people with type 2 diabetes, weight loss also can make it easier to manage blood sugar levels.

A diabetic diet comprises of 3 meals a day but at regular times. By following this your body can better use the insulin produces and help get through the symptoms more smoothly.

A registered dietitian can help you put together a diet based on your health goals, tastes and lifestyle.

Following a healthy eating plan is the best way you can keep a check on blood sugar levels and prevent complications related to diabetes or risks that may follow.

Talk to a registered dietitian who can help improve your eating habits and advise lifestyle changes and medications. Your doctor may also recommend physical activity if need be.

Since a diabetic diet involves a lot of vegetables and fruits and other healthy foods along with workout plans, it is even more essential to monitor sugar levels.

Keeping a glucometer helps you track sugar levels and maintain a record from wherever you may be.
