Myth or Fact: Karela Is Only For Diabetics

Karela or bitter gourd lowers blood sugar levels and triglyceride levels. But this does not mean it has to be consumed by just diabetic patients.It is a long believed myth that Karela should be consumed only and if you have diabetes.

The reality is that Karela can be consumed by people of all ages, suffering or not from diabetes. Karela is used particularly as a remedy for diabetes as it contains insulin like peptides, which are essential for diabetic patients.

Apart from this, it helps in

  • Purifying Blood:

Karela juice has blood purifying properties and therefore is used for treatment of blood disorders like blood poisoning and blood boils. Consuming it daily on an empty stomach will improve your condition in a couple of months.

  • Good for the stomach:

Since Karela or Bitter-gourd contains fiber rich cellulose, therefore it helps prevent constipation. The digestive agent present in Karela helps stimulate the secretion of gastric juices. This can help people suffering from dyspepsia. ( A word of caution: It may sometimes cause heartburn and ulcers)

  • Helps in weight loss:

Karela juice helps stimulate the liver for secretion of bile juices that are essential for metabolizing fats. It is perfect, if you are trying to lose some weight.

  • Helps in piles:

Fresh karela juice is good for patients who have piles. Karela juice with some buttermilk in the morning for a month can help overcome this problem. You can even apply a paste of karela plant topically over piles.

  • Helps in eye care:

Some studies have suggested Karela juice can help improve eyesight.

  • Helps overcome alcoholism and smoking:

Karela juice contains purifying properties that help flush the liver of harmful sediments and nicotine thus restoring ad nourishing it to its natural state.

The only thing you need to keep in mind is that over-use of karela juices can cause abdominal pains and nausea. Therefore should not be consumed in high amounts.
