We are using an existing, safe and inexpensive vaccine called BCG.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.p4fehtgij72g\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_What_inspired_you_to_research_diabetes_Dr_Denise_Faustman\"><\/span><span class=\"c6\">2. What inspired you to research diabetes Dr. Denise Faustman?<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"c1\">I am an immunologist by training and have been working on strategies to help islet transplants. What frustrated me is that transplanted islets suffer the same fate as the original islets. We have to stop the body from attacking the pancreas, and so I began to look for a way to do that.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.ul1l3d1gj61w\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_How_has_been_the_journey_from_phase_1_to_phase_2_of_research_on_developing_the_vaccine_for_diabetes\"><\/span><span class=\"c6\">3. How has been the journey from phase 1 to phase 2 of research on developing the vaccine for diabetes?<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"c1\">Exciting. We went from a small, but very successful, proof of concept Phase I trial to a much larger Phase II trial with 150 patients. It is a huge undertaking supported entirely by philanthropy&#8211;a clinical trial for the people by the people!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.tcbhwu4fuotr\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Will_this_vaccine_prevent_Type_1_diabetes_and_Type_2_diabetes_or_only_Type_1_diabetes\"><\/span><span class=\"c6\">4. Will this vaccine prevent Type 1 diabetes and Type 2 diabetes or only Type 1 diabetes?<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"c1\">We are testing BCG to treat type 1 diabetics who already have the disease. There are prevention trials underway in other parts of the world, but that is not our study population. We recently learned of BCG work going on in type 2, which is interesting, but very early and, again, that is not our focus with the current studies.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.s28igrb5isg0\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_What_frustrates_you_in_this_endeavour\"><\/span><span class=\"c6\">5. What frustrates you in this endeavour?<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"c1\">The pace of doing a clinical trial can be daunting. We are asking tough questions and doing a very long follow up. People want quick answers, but good answers take time.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.z6wnug16x6ii\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6_What_keeps_you_going_un-frazzled\"><\/span><span class=\"c6\">6. What keeps you going un-frazzled?<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"c1\">The patients that come in every day to donate blood for our research and who seek to enrol in the trial. And the people who sacrifice big and small to help us with our work &#8212; things like a handwritten note with a check for $23 describing a lemonade stand fundraiser a child did for our work. All of the stories, the bike rides, the bake sales and just the dedication and energy of the people involved helps us.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.8oyju07xhmoq\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"7_We_learn_that_many_volunteers_call_you_for_participating_in_the_trials_This_must_be_encouraging_and_also_indicates_the_hope_Type_1_diabetics_have_on_the_research\"><\/span><span class=\"c6\">7. We learn that many volunteers call you for participating in the trials. This must be encouraging and also indicates the hope Type 1 diabetics have on the research.<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"c1\">Trial enrollment is very complex and we have a set of criteria that the FDA has approved, so we cannot enrol everyone, but we try to give as many people the opportunity to participate in our research as we can. And, yes, we are very encouraged by the interest in the trial.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.sjsn67cdxw7m\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"8_The_world_of_Type_1_diabetes_10_years_later_How_do_you_envision_it\"><\/span><span class=\"c6\">8. The world of Type 1 diabetes , 10 years later. How do you envision it?<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"c1\">I cannot speculate on the outcome of our trial, but for type 1 diabetes, I hope we find ways to stop the body from destroying its pancreas (including by potentially using BCG) and help the body regenerate new beta cells. Ten years ago that seemed crazy, but now it is a goal that we can possibly achieve.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.p496nie6hn16\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"9_Your_research_trials_are_done_on_mice_Can_success_in_animal_models_benefit_humans_as_well\"><\/span><span class=\"c6\">9. Can success in animal models benefit humans as well?<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"c1\">We did mouse studies over ten years ago. Our Phase I trial was in human patients with long-term type 1 diabetes (mean duration: 15 years). We also have more than a decade of work on samples from human blood. We have not been a mouse lab for a very long time.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.fxrqpii3928v\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"10_What_next_in_diabetes_research_for_you\"><\/span><span class=\"c6\">10. What next in diabetes research for you?<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"c1\">We are very focused on the Phase II clinical trial to see how BCG helps a large population of type 1 diabetics. We are also learning more about the mechanism of BCG, including how it creates a host relationship with the body and may influence the function of T cells. It is all very exciting. We have a lot of work to do.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"c1\">If you have Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes, do not forget to follow all the recommendations given by your doctor or health coach.
