Diabetic Retinopathy

According to the American Diabetes Association, people with diabetes are 40% more likely to suffer from glaucoma than people without diabetes. It is a recognized fact that the longer the duration of diabetes the more are the chances of glaucoma in the eye. It is also said that the risk also increases as the age of the individual progresses. Cataract causes the eye lens to get cloudy and block light. Diabetes affects the clarity of the vision and cataract is common in individuals.

Retinopathy is also a cause of concern in individuals with long term diabetes. The chronic state of high blood glucose levels can affect the thin capillaries of the eye affecting the vision. Retinopathy is identified as three types:

Diabetic Retinopathy

Non-proliferative Retinopathy

In Non-proliferative Retinopathy, capillaries in the back of the eye swell to form pouches.

Macular Edema

In Macular Edema, the capillary walls are weakened and there is reduced control in the passage of substances between the blood and the retina. Fluid leakage causes the macula to swell, blurring the vision.

Proliferative Retinopathy

In Proliferative Retinopathy, as the damaged blood vessels close off and new blood vessels start growing in the retina which is actually weak causing blood leakage, blocked vision. The growth of new blood vessels causes scar tissue that can cause retinal detachment.

All of the above conditions can be treated if detected at early stages. It is essential that if you have diabetes getting a comprehensive diagnosis through an eye health care provider is imminent.
