How Does Blood Glucose Monitoring Device or Glucometer Work?

What is a glucometer?
A glucometer is a medical device that helps self measure blood sugar levels anytime and from anywhere. Because of the level of testing required glucometers must meet specific FDA regulations for accuracy.

How does it work?
There are various types of glucometers, some that reflect readings on an external device and some are mobile glucometer.

A glucometer provides readings by detecting the level of glucose in a person’s blood. To get the reading, a person pricks the skin — most commonly tip of the finger — and applies the blood sample gained to a test strip inserted in the meter. The glucose in the blood reacts with chemicals present in the strip. The electrical currents then pass through, determining the level of glucose in the blood sample and providing numerical results within seconds.

A mobile based glucometer is a more advanced type which connects to your phone. Once you place your blood sample it automatically reflects the reading on your mobile. The auto sync of readings allow you to take samples and maintain a record from anywhere.

The broader categories of glucometer are:

  • Self-Monitoring Blood Glucose (SMBG) Meters: These are the most basic and typical meters that require test strips and small blood samples. You can buy over the counter meters and glucometer strips online.
  • Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGMs): This type of monitoring requires sensors to be implanted under the skin to take readings every few minutes through the day and night. They require approval and implantation from your medical doctor.
  • Non Invasive Glucometer: These meters do not need blood samples. Instead, they sense glucose levels through blood-rich areas of your skin. However, this technology is still being developed.

Factors that affect your glucose reading.

Before you buy glucometer it is important to keep a few things in mind

  • Sample size: Look out for the blood sample needed to perform a test. This will give you an idea of how much blood you may need to perform a test. The smaller your sample size, the less blood you will need to get the result.
  • Meter accuracy: No glucose meter can confirm 100% accuracy in readings. Most meters display results with an accuracy of around 10% of the figure. The best glucometer accuracy is about 89-90%. Though there are brands that claim to offer more these days.
  • Ease of use: Consider how easy to use your glucometer is. You will be taking reading multiple times, so it is better if your have less complicated steps to follow.
  • Memory: Consider whether the meters memory size will be sufficient for you or not. If you test 5 times a day than a 100 test memory will give about 20 days of memory. Now choose according to your testing units.
  • Cost of strips and meter: The cost of meter should be considered before you buy. You don’t want to burn a hole in your pocket with your decision.

Choose wisely
Keeping all the above factors in mind, you can buy glucometer online. Consider and compare the price of glucometer as well. Since diabetes will be with you for a while, you might want to keep the course pocket friendly.
The price of glucometer + cost of stips + any online charges when purchasing glucometer online + the above factors, should all lead to your final purchase.
